Making UN SDGs a reality
Even though we are a small business, Bunavat's commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) stands firm. Of course, the size of an enterprise doesn't determine the role it can play in advancing the SDGs!
The first one that we are committed to is SDG 12 - 'Responsible consumption and production'. We put the planet and its people first. By working with only natural fibres, eco-friendly dyes, strictly only handwoven and handcrafted techniques, consciously upcycling waste fabrics and paying our craftspeople fairly are some of the aspects of responsible production that we adhere to.
The next one is SDG 8 - 'Decent work and economic growth' and that holds more relevance now than ever. Providing opportunities of economic productivity to women and men, equal pay for equal work and introducing diversification, creativity and innovation to achieve economic stability stays as a focus area for us. We are committed to doing our bit to create new economic opportunities in the clusters we work in.
Another SDG that is important for us is 10 - 'Reduced inequalities'. Ensuring equal opportunities and social and economic inclusion of all, irrespective of age, sex, religion, etc. is important if we are striving for a fairer world. Inequalities of outcomes that arise due to discriminatory practices is an aspect we wish to eliminate in all our dealing with our communities, customers and stakeholders of the ecosystem. Treating everyone with respect and assuring their equal participation in our work is a given. Little things but necessary for us.
Nearly 72% of handloom weavers (including allied services) are women as per the 4th national handloom census. It has always been our endeavor to prioritize working with women weavers and artisans wherever possible and ensure fair wages at all times. To see an equitable world, we have to take charge in whatever capacity possible. SDG 5 - 'Gender Equality' is close to our hearts and a cause we believe in.
We are mindful of the impact of our work and at our scale too, we are making efforts to stay committed to making the SDGs a reality!
